Mixed skill

Co-op games that survive a skill gap

“He’s 400 hours in. I just want to not die.” Most co-op lists ignore that sentence. These games were tagged because a skill gap is a feature, not a wipe.

Asymmetric roles, shared puzzles, and revive-friendly campaigns beat shooters that pretend a second controller is enough.

It Takes Two

2021

~12h campaign · 90 min sessions

A divorcing couple gets stuck as dolls and has to cooperate through a house-sized adventure. Still the gold standard for 'games like Split Fiction.'

Every level gives you different abilities, so the stronger player cannot just solo it. Cross-play means PC and Switch can sit on the same couch in spirit.

Split Fiction

2025

~12h campaign · 90 min sessions

Hazelight's follow-up to It Takes Two: two writers fall into their own stories and have to finish the book together. Built so neither of you is a passenger.

The whole campaign is designed around mixed skill. If one of you is rusty, the other can carry a mechanic without stealing the fun.

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

2015

15 min sessions

One person sees a bomb. Everyone else has the manual and cannot see the bomb. You have minutes. Do not cut the wrong wire.

The 'gamer' defuses. The 'non-gamer' reads the PDF. It is the cleanest mixed-skill design on this list.

Portal 2

2011

~8h campaign · 45 min sessions

Still the best co-op puzzle game ever shipped. Two test subjects, one test chamber, a lot of falling with style.

Puzzles are built so both portals matter. Talking through the solution matters more than twitch skill.

Unravel Two

2018

~6h campaign · 40 min sessions

Two yarn creatures swing, stitch, and tug each other through sunlit puzzles. Quiet, pretty, and over in an evening if you push it.

You share a rope. The better player can set up swings while the other just holds on, then swap. No one gets left in a fail loop.

Overcooked! All You Can Eat

2020

~8h campaign · 20 min sessions

Kitchens that move, catch fire, and split in half while you try to plate a salad. Friendship stress test, in a good way mostly.

Levels are 3–4 minutes. Assign the simpler station to the newer cook. Cross-play is in this version. Can get loud — that is the joke.
